Sermons in Song

Paul Brown began leading singing in Churches of Christ in 1945, mostly in the state of Tennessee. He led for 70 years before his death in 2017.

During his years of music ministry, he sought to follow the advice of the apostle Paul that we should sing both with the spirit and with understanding (1 Cor 14: 15). A worship leader should encourage the congregation to think about the words they are singing so that worship can be a meaningful expression of praise to God.

My father was known especially for leading a time of worship with a sermon in songs and scriptures. The words of a familiar hymn or a passage of scripture served to organize the theme of the sermon. On this page are some of his favorites. Please feel free to use and adapt any of this material for your worship services, and give God the glory.

“This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.”
